Influenza is an acute viral infection of the respiratory tract that can affect all age groups. It is characterised by a sudden onset of symptoms, classically headaches, fever, aches and pains, shivering, cough and sore throat. It is a self-limiting illness lasting about seven days. It occurs in outbreaks and could lead to death from secondary bacterial pneumonia. It is spread by droplet infection, i.e. by coughing and sneezing. It can survive on towels and clothing for weeks.
The vaccine is prepared each year using virus strains considered to be those most likely to be active in the forthcoming season. Protection lasts for about one year. Vaccination is a safe and effective way in preventing infection. Vaccination should be undertaken in the September / October period.
